3 Study Tips for SAT & ACT Math Sections

Preparing for the math sections can be daunting at first, especially if math isn’t your strong suit. Thankfully, there is an efficient way to approach the SAT and ACT math portions. In this article, we will give you the top three tips you should be using to start studying for the math sections on the SAT & ACT.

SAT & ACT Math – Study Tips:

Tip #1: Fill-In Any Content Gaps

Because math classes are all accumulative, you’ll need to honestly assess your math skills before you start your test prep. For the ACT exam, you’ll need to master all math topics from classes leading up to Algebra II. And, with the SAT, you’ll need to know all of that, including aspects of Algebra II as well.

Both the SAT and ACT have non-calculator sections, so make sure you are still able to do complex operations by-hand. For example, you may not have had to do long division or multi-digit multiplication in a few years, but it could still help you on your exam. Do a quick refresher on any core concepts that seem foggy to you.

To fill in any content gaps, we recommend going through all of your old textbooks, as well as watching video tutorials on websites like KhanAcademy or Youtube. Once you review a concept in your textbook or via an online video, go ahead and attempt a few practice problems to solidify the concept.

Tip #2: Memorize Formulas

For both the SAT and ACT, there are some formulas that you should have committed to memory. We recommend that you study formulas using flash cards, then use the formula in some practice exercises.

Tip #3: Learn Your Calculator

Your calculator is a very useful tool. It can solve problems, graph functions, and even statistically analyze data. If you haven’t already, you should research your calculator and watch some tutorials on how to best use it.

When you’re doing practice tests, if you discover any operations that you are unable to do on your calculator, make note of them so that you can learn them later.
